Do loyalty rewards really increase basket size? Most teams assume they do. Bigger reward → bigger spend. But the data tells a different story.

Based on our analysis of some retail loyalty programs, using methods like difference-in-difference and matched cohorts, we found:

👉 Rewards do not increase spend per visit
👉 Customers who redeem rewards don’t grow basket value faster than others
👉 But they churn ~5 p.p. less often than comparable customers
👉 After just 4 months, their CLV is ~30% higher – and the gap keeps growing

So where does the value actually come from? Not from bigger baskets. But from longer customer lifetime. We uncover that smaller basket × more months = more revenue than bigger basket × faster churn.

How should you look at it?

✅ Measure retention impact, not just basket uplift
If you only look at spend per visit, rewards may seem ineffective

✅ Evaluate rewards through CLV, not short-term revenue
The real return builds over time

✅ Treat rewards as a retention mechanic – not a sales boost
They work by extending the relationship, not increasing the ticket. And that’s why their biggest value often goes unnoticed.

At Loyalty Point, we help teams uncover where loyalty programs actually create value – and how to measure it properly.
