Poland's largest national park is a swamp. We know how that sounds. But Biebrza has elk, wolves, 270 bird species, and a wooden boardwalk that runs straight into the marsh.

Princess Daisy's name is attached to Książ Castle. There's a story that a N**i treasure train was buried beneath it during WWII. No one's found it.
Day nine of a ten-day private tour. It started a week earlier on the Baltic coast, in Gdańsk.
Details in the first comment.

Near the town of Gryfino, in western Poland, sits a grove of pines planted around 1930. Each one bends 90 degrees at the base, then grows straight up. Cause: still debated. The leading theory is that local farmers manipulated the young trees for use in shipbuilding or furniture, then WWII intervened.

Pączki look like donuts. They're not. They're heavier, eggier, usually filled with rose-petal jam or sweet plum. Once you've had a fresh one from a Warsaw bakery at 8am, regular donuts feel… optional. Have you tried one?

The Kashubian Lake District sits 30 kilometers from Gdańsk and feels like another country. Thirty post-glacial lakes, the highest hills in northern Poland, and a thousand-year-old culture that kept its own language. Worth a day trip from any Pomerania itinerary.

Warsaw has four cities inside it, depending on how you look at it.

The rebuilt Old Town, reconstructed from 18th-century paintings after the war left almost nothing standing. The Palace of Culture looming over Grzybowski Square — a gift from Stalin that Warsaw never asked for and can't ignore. The Uprising Monument, which stops people mid-stride every time. And Łazienki Park, where the palace sits on a lake and the whole thing feels like a different century entirely.

Most first-timers expect one Warsaw. They find several.

Lublin — eastern Poland's largest city, two hours by car from Warsaw. A compact walled Old Town of about 10 hectares, the Gothic Kraków Gate, a 12th-century castle, and the Trinitarian Tower with a 360-degree view over rooftops and the Bystrzyca valley. Worth a full day, easy to combine with Kazimierz Dolny on the way back.

The Hejnał Mariacki — Kraków's hourly trumpet call — has sounded from St. Mary's tower since at least 1392, in four directions, always cut off mid-phrase in memory of a legendary medieval sentry. The noon call airs live across Poland on national radio. On our Kraków walking tours, we time the Main Market Square stop accordingly.

One weekend a year, hundreds of Polish museums, castles, and normally-closed archives stay open until 5 AM, mostly for free. This year it's coming up — Warsaw, Wrocław, Poznań, Łódź and most of the country on Saturday May 16; Kraków one night earlier, Friday May 15. Warsaw's English program is at muzea.waw.pl/en. Worth a late night?
