First imagined in science fiction, the technology is now real, with motes as small as 0.02 cubic millimeters able to record temperature, humidity, sound, and chemicals.

The global smart dust industry, valued at $115 million in 2022, is projected to reach nearly $400 million by 2032.

While applications range from medicine to mining, militaries see intelligence potential, sparking privacy and geoengineering concerns. Some experts warn smart dust could become both revolutionary and dystopian.
