In Memoriam: Professor Barbara Grzelakowska-Sztabert
We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Professor Barbara Grzelakowska-Sztabert, an outstanding biochemist, esteemed researcher, academic teacher, and long-standing member of the Polish Biochemical Society.
Born in Warsaw in 1938, Professor Grzelakowska-Sztabert dedicated her entire scientific career to the Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology, Polish Academy of Sciences, where she headed the Laboratory of Biosynthetic Processes and later the Department of Cell Biochemistry. Her research significantly contributed to understanding biosynthetic processes and cellular function.
She authored over 110 scientific papers and supervised several PhD theses. For her scientific and organizational achievements, she received numerous honors, including the Golden Cross of Merit, the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta, and the B. Skarżyński Award of the Polish Biochemical Society.
A devoted member of the Polish Biochemical Society since 1962, she served as Secretary of the Main Board (1977–1983) and Chair of the Warsaw Branch (1992–1998).
Professor Grzelakowska-Sztabert will be remembered as an inspiring scientist, a dedicated mentor, and a person of great integrity, culture, and kindness.
She will be deeply missed.
