The supposedly "dark" Diablo 4 looks like a video slot machine next to Diablo 2, which was so literally dark you couldn't see to the edge of the screen. It felt lonely and dangerous.

I'm not going to say that dungeon crawling loot-em-ups never got any better than Diablo 2, but hear me out: maybe they didn't. Diablo 2 is perfectly happy just to let you build a little murder person, and run around with other little murder people spamming the bejesus out of attacks that turn all monster crowds into bloody gibs. And then it lets you do it again.
