Tongue and Taste Buds – In Short:

Tongue: A muscular organ in the mouth that helps with speaking, chewing, swallowing, and tasting.

Taste Buds: Tiny sensory organs located mostly on the tongue’s surface, especially in the papillae (small bumps).

Humans have around 2,000–8,000 taste buds.

Each taste bud can detect five basic tastes:

Sweet

Sour

Salty

Bitter

Umami (savory)

Taste buds send signals to the brain via nerves to identify flavors.

They are replaced approximately every 10–14 days.
