1. What is a CDE?
A CDE (Common Data Environment) is a single source of information for a project.
The Old Way: Everyone keeps files on their own servers and sends emails. If a dispute happens, nobody knows which version of a drawing is the "truth."

The Aconex Way: Every organization (Client, Contractor, Architect, Subcontractor) works inside one "walled garden." Every document upload and every mail sent is timestamped and locked.

2. The Core Principle: Neutrality
This is the most important concept in Aconex. Most platforms (like SharePoint) have an "Owner" who can see everyone’s files and delete things. Aconex is Neutral.

Ownership: Your organization owns its own data. If you upload a document but don't "transmit" it, the Main Contractor cannot see it.

No Deletion: Once a piece of Project Mail is sent or a Document is formally transmitted, it cannot be deleted or recalled. This protects you; if a contractor claims they didn't receive a drawing, the "Transmittal History" serves as legal proof.

Transparency: Every organization has its own private "box," but when they share data, it becomes part of the permanent project record.
3. Navigating the Lobby & Dashboard
When you log in, you don't go straight to a project. You go to the Lobby.

The Lobby
The Lobby is your "Airport Terminal." If you are working on 5 different construction projects, they will all appear here.

Organization Selection: Ensure you are under the correct company name.
Project List: Click on your specific project to enter the Dashboard.

The Dashboard (Your Command Center)
Once inside a project, the Dashboard shows you what requires your immediate attention.
Tasks: These are "Action Items." If an RFI is sent to you, or a document needs your approval, it will appear here.

Mail: Quick counts of your Unread, Outstanding, and Overdue mail.
Recent Documents: A shortcut to the last files you worked on.
The Blue Sidebar/Top Bar: This is your primary navigation to switch between Mail, Documents, Tasks, and Directory.

4. Hands-on Task: Profile & Preferences
Let's get your account "Pro-ready." Follow these steps:

Step A: Set Up Your Profile
Click on your Name/Icon in the top right corner.
Select User Profile.
Check your details: Ensure your Job Title and Phone Number are correct. In a project with 500 people, the "Directory" is how people find you to ask questions.

Upload a Profile Picture: (Optional but recommended) It helps identify who is responding in workflows.
Step B: Notification Preferences (Crucial!)
Aconex can be "noisy." You don't want 100 emails a day for things you've already seen.

Go to Setup > User Preferences.
Select Mail Preferences.
The "Email Me" setting: Decide if you want an external email (Outlook/Gmail) every time you get Aconex mail.

Pro Tip: Most power users set this to "Summary" or "Disabled" once they get used to checking the Aconex Task page daily.
Time Zone: Ensure your time zone is accurate. Since Aconex is used for legal deadlines, a 1-hour difference can matter!
