Hantavirus is a rare but serious rodent-borne virus that can cause two major illnesses: Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) in the Americas and Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS) in Europe and Asia. It spreads mainly through contact with rodent urine, droppings, or saliva, and while uncommon, it can be fatal if not treated promptly.
