In 1997, Reliance’s refinery in Jamnagar caused heavy pollution, drawing repeated notices from the Gujarat Pollution Control Board. The company faced a big question: save the environment or keep operations running?
Mukesh Ambani made a bold and visionary choice — to plant mango trees on the barren, saline land around the refinery. It was a long shot, but Reliance committed to transforming the land.
With technology, they used desalination, drip irrigation, rainwater harvesting, and nutrient management. It took 7–8 years, but the efforts paid off.
Today, that land is now Dhirubhai Ambani Lakhibag Amrayee, a lush mango orchard spread over 600 acres, with 1.3 lakh trees and 200+ mango varieties — from Alphonso to Tommy Atkins.
The orchard produces 600 tonnes of mangoes every year. Reliance is now the world’s largest exporter of mangoes — from a refinery to a global fruit powerhouse.
Beyond farming, Reliance helps local farmers by distributing 1 lakh free saplings every year and providing training in modern agriculture.
What was once a polluted industrial site is now a green success story. Mukesh Ambani turned a crisis into an opportunity — benefiting the environment, business, and society.
