January 6, 2026 — A major breakthrough has emerged from the Pak–Afghan border.
A joint meeting between Pakistani and Afghan border authorities and traders is seen as a significant step toward ending the three-month border closure.
Key outcomes:
• Agreement to restore trade: Both sides acknowledged massive financial losses due to the closure and agreed to resume trade as soon as possible.
• Phase one – clearance of stuck trucks: Thousands of trucks at Torkham and Chaman will be cleared first, with priority given to perishable goods like fruits, vegetables, and food items.
• Passport & visa policy: Pakistan will maintain passport and visa requirements due to security concerns, though easing procedures for Afghan patients and traders is under consideration.
• 13-member joint committee plan: A phased reopening is recommended within 3–5 days, subject to security agencies’ consultations.
• Movement of people: No final decision yet for general passenger movement; it remains conditional on full security clearance.
Current status:
The border is not fully open yet, but progress is positive. Recommendations have been sent to higher authorities, and gradual resumption of cargo movement is expected soon.
