It's easy to forget to eat and put your meals or snacks on the back burner – especially when you are focused on a task.
Unfortunately, this can send your body into a sort of panic – more commonly known as being “hangry.”
When you eat, your body breaks down some of the food into sugars (glucose), which becomes energy for your cells. If you skip meals or forget to eat, your body runs out of the glucose stores and releases hormones, including adrenaline and cortisol (the stress hormones), to help restore balance to your blood sugar levels.
Unfortunately, for some people, the release of cortisol can cause aggression, and too much cortisol can impair brain functions like rational thinking – hence you end up being hungry and angry…aka hangry.
An easy way to avoid becoming hangry is to eat a balanced diet AND by eating every 3-4 hours. Planning snacks ahead of time can also help when you’re out for a long time. Don’t ignore the signs. If you are hungry, try to eat nutritious foods to give your body the energy it needs to continue normally.
