The Birth of Science: The Milesian School
Before these men, people explained the world through myths and gods. The Milesians changed everything by looking for natural, logical reasons for how the world works.
The Big Three
• Thales (The Starter): He is considered the first scientist/philosopher. He famously predicted a solar eclipse, proving that the heavens follow predictable laws, not just divine whim. He believed everything was made of water.
• Anaximander (The Explorer): He thought the “primal substance” couldn’t be just one element (like water), or it would take over everything else. He was a pioneer who made the first map and even suggested that humans evolved from fish because human babies are too helpless to survive on their own at birth.
• Anaximenes (The Scientist): He argued that everything is made of air. He introduced the idea that substances change based on density: air gets thinner to become fire, and gets thicker to become water, earth, and finally stone.
Why This Matters
These three men laid the foundation for modern science by shifting the focus from “Who did this?” (the gods) to “How does this work?” (physics and observation).
