DEEP BRAIN STIMULATION DBS SURGERY AS TREATMENT OF EPILEPSY
For the first time in Pakistan, a patient of epilepsy underwent Deep Brain Stimulation by Prof. Dr. Shahzad Shams and the team.
Patient Mr. WJ, is a known case of epilepsy since birth. He is a special and the only child to a beautiful couple in Lahore. This makes him their precious one. He has been having intractable seizures since birth and the frequency was around 10-15times in a day. He was being managed with four anti-epileptics by his attending neurologist, a senior professor in Children’s Hospital. EEG was non-conclusive and MRI did not show any focus. His attending referred this patient to Prof. Dr. Shahzad Shams for possible Neurosurgical Intervention. Bilateral Anterior Nucleus of Thalamus (ANT) was the target chosen and Deep Brain Stimulation was done by using leads from PINS.
DBS for Intractable epilepsy is now FDA approved and the facility is available with us. Overall prevalence of epilepsy in Pakistan is estimated to be 9.99 per 1000 population. A lot of patients in Pakistan will benefit from this new treatment available as it is proven to decrease the seizure rates between 50% to 95%.
