A chiral carbon, also known as an asymmetric carbon, is a carbon atom that is bonded to four different types of atoms or groups of atoms.
Chiral carbons are also referred to as stereogenic carbons or asymmetrical carbon atoms
The presence of a chiral carbon in a molecule means that the molecule is chiral, which means that it cannot be superimposed on its own mirror image Chiral molecules contain one or more chiral centers, which are almost always tetrahedral (sp3-hybridized) carbons with four different substituents To identify a chiral carbon, the four groups attached to the carbon atom have to be arranged in the relative order of priority, with the group with the highest atomic number given the highest priority and the group with the lowest atomic number given the lowest priority If a carbon atom is bonded to fewer than four different substituents, it will have a plane of symmetry, making it achiral
