Hate against women drivers is larger than a stereotype, it’s discrimination.
In 2021, the WHO reported 28,000 traffic-related deaths in Pakistan, with drivers overwhelmingly being men. Yet women are still targeted with degrading claims meant to push them out of public spaces.
Stop normalising gender based hate speech.
Rivets Learning and Sungi Development Foundation, with support from UNDP, are working to counter gender based hate speech.
In this conversation, Ali Jan sheds light on the realities of gender-based hate speech—how it manifests, the harm it causes, and why challenging it is essential for creating safer and more inclusive spaces, both online and offline.
Dr. Jan is the Chairperson of the Department of Governance and Global Studies at Information Technology University (ITU), Lahore, and holds a DPhil in International Development from the University of Oxford. Known for bridging academia and media, he is also recognized for his role as Yaseen in the drama serial Aik Aur Pakeezah.
