Rene Clert โ€œBobetโ€ Baterbonia was just another typical boy from a public school who was given a big break in a private school โ€” not because his family could afford it, but because of his agility and skills. He was granted a high school scholarship, which became his passport to a bigger stage in Senior High School, where he shone like no other at the Ateneo de Davao University.

Rene first made a name for himself representing Davao Region. He led DAVRAA to its first-ever Palarong Pambansa basketball championship in 2025 and earned the tournamentโ€™s MVP award and was named Mythical Five in 2026 when he led Davao to a silver finish in his hometown of Agusan del Sur (gmanet.com)

His performances earned him a full scholarship to the country's most prestigious learning institution, the Ateneo de Manila University โ€” his dream school. But before he could ever dribble the ball to the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP), before he could ever fulfill his big dreams for his family, Reneโ€™s life was cut short on June 8, 2026, in a drowning incident โ€” a loss that shattered his family and plunged an entire nation into grief and rage!

To his many fans, he was a young man who could fly on the hard court. But when asked about his plans, he simply said, โ€œJust a kid with a big dream.โ€

This is the story of Rene Baterbonia. He may no longer be able to dream big for his family, but he will remain remarkable for his humble heart, which touched so many.

Athletes donโ€™t just train โ€” they must balance academics, competition, and the responsibility of representing their school. For Rene, basketball was more than a sport. It was a way to pursue his dreams and help provide a better future for his family through hard work and sacrifice.

Born and raised in Talacogon, Agusan del Sur, Rene came from a humble family. He was thrifty with himself but generous with his loved ones. His journey began in a small Mindanao town with big dreams, and through perseverance, he became one of the countryโ€™s most promising athletes.

Although Reneโ€™s life ended far too soon, his legacy endures. He will always be remembered not only for his talent but also for his love for family, his generosity, and his determination. His name will continue to inspire young Filipinos to pursue their dreams with courage and resilience.

And he will always remain the pride of the DepEd family.
