House of Velora emerged as the overall champion of this yearโs MathSoc Week after a week of intense academic and e-sport competition held from March 23 to March 25, with the closing ceremony conducted on April 8 at the Lucinda Campus following a postponement due to holidays.
Organized by the Mathematical Society, the annual event carried the theme โCENDRA: The Rise of the Ancient Grove, the Clash for Eternal Renown,โ bringing together four houses in a showcase of intelligence, skill, and teamwork.
The week-long celebration officially opened with a campus parade, where students rallied behind their respective houses through coordinated chants and displays. The opening program followed, highlighted by the sashing of Mr. and Ms. MathSoc candidates and the ceremonial torch lighting. MathSoc executives encouraged participants to actively engage in the activities and uphold camaraderie throughout the event.
Competitions began with MathSoc Olympics where participants jump into mental challenges, including Tower of Hanoi, Rubikโs Cube, Sudoku, Tangrams, Chess, Snakes and Ladders, Connect 4 in a row, E-sports Mobile Legends. House of Sylvara sustained its strong performance, while House of Velora and Thalora followed in the rankings.
Moreover, the momentum continued with the Quiz Bee competition, followed by the preliminary rounds of the Mr. and Ms. Mathematical Society. The House of Velora led the Quiz Bee with 300 points, followed by the House of Thalora with 250 points, while the House of Sylvara placed third with 200 points.
On the third day, the spotlight turned to the much-anticipated Mr. and Ms. MathSoc 2026 pageant. Candidates competed in multiple segments that tested not only their poise and confidence but also their critical thinking. The first half of the competition presented minor awards to the candidate who possessed the right criteria.
Minor awards:
Mr. and Ms. Photogenic
Mr. Reyster B. Mayuyu (Thalora)
Ms. Jordin Belarmino (Sylvara)
Best in Casual Wear
Mr. Kurt Yhumchie Tonelada (Velora)
Ms. Clarise A. Nool (Thalora)
Best in Advocacy
Mr. Arjay Palma (Thalora)
Ms. Joy Land Pangilinan (Zephira)
Best in Formal Attire
Mr. Juved Nicdao (Zephira)
Ms. Janelle Tolentino (Velora)
Afterwards, the competition progressed to the selection of finalists. Mr. Sylvara, Mr. Zephira, and Mr. Velora were named as the top three candidates in the male category, while Ms. Thalora, Ms. Zephira, and Ms. Velora secured the top three spots in the female category. These finalists advanced to the final round, the question-and-answer portion.
The titles were ultimately awarded to Ms. Janelle Tolentino and Mr. Kurt Yhumchie Tonelada of the House of Velora, who impressed the judges during the final question-and-answer round. Other finalists also delivered tough performance, with Joy Land Pangilinan and Juved Nicdao of the House of Zephira earning the first runner-up titles. Meanwhile, Mr. Mark Rayven Tapnio of the House of Sylvara and Ms. Clarise Nool of the House Thalora were named second runner-up.
With a total of 2,240 points, House of Velora clinched the championship title, narrowly surpassing House of Zephira with 1,950 points, House of Sylvara with 1,820 points, and House of Thalora with 1,800 points.
MathSoc Vice President Internal and pageant organizer Sofia Carla Sibulo shared that the success of the event was a result of strong collaboration among the organizers despite the challenges.
โAs organizer ng Mr. and Ms. MathSoc 2026 together with my co organizer Stephanie Go, sobrang fulfilling at nakaka-relieve na matagumpay naming naraos yung event. Hindi naging madali dahil may mga challenges tulad ng time delays at last-minute adjustments, pero nalagpasan namin ito dahil sa teamwork,โ she said.
The successful MathSoc Week once again highlighted the importance of balancing academic excellence with teamwork and sportsmanship, leaving students with meaningful experiences beyond the classroom.
