An octopus has three hearts: two branchial (gill) hearts pump blood to the gills for oxygen, and one systemic (main) heart circulates the oxygenated blood to the rest of the body.The systemic heart stops beating when they swim, making crawling more efficient.
Heart functions
Branchial Hearts (2): These smaller hearts receive deoxygenated blood and pump it through the gills to pick up oxygen.
Systemic Heart (1): This larger, central heart receives the oxygenated blood from the gills and pumps it to all the other organs and muscles.
