IF YOU FIND YOUR CAR ALREADY FLOODED:

1. Do not start the engine.
Trying to start it can cause severe engine damage if water entered the cylinders.

2. Disconnect the battery (if it’s safe to access).
This prevents electrical shorts or fires.

3. Assess how deep the water reached:
Floor only: minor electrical and interior cleaning.
Seats or dashboard: serious damage likely; call a professional mechanic or insurance.
Over dashboard: the car may be totaled.

4. Document everything for insurance.
Take photos/videos of the exterior, interior, and waterline.

5. Call your insurance company ASAP.
Tell them your car was flooded and ask what to do next.
Comprehensive coverage often includes flood damage.

6. Tow the vehicle — don’t drive it.
Bring it to your nearest car dealership to inspect the engine, transmission, and electronics.

7. Dry out the interior.
