Aspe, Mr. Erwin Jones A. Tucong, Ms. Phresnofi D. Noval-Don, Dr. Ruby C. Gonzales, and Dr. Venus E. Leopardas of Mindanao State University at Naawan, together with their co-authors from the University of the Ryukyus, Kagoshima University, Western Philippines UniversityโPuerto Princesa City Campus, Aklan State UniversityโNew Washington Campus, University of the Philippines Los Baรฑos, Bicol University Tabaco Campus, and University of the Philippines Mindanao, for their recent publication in ๐๐ง๐ฏ๐ข๐ซ๐จ๐ง๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ญ๐๐ฅ ๐๐๐, a prestigious Q1 Scopus-indexed journal ranked among the Top 5% of journals worldwide in its field.
Their study, titled โ๐๐๐ง๐ ๐ซ๐จ๐ฏ๐-๐๐ฌ๐ฌ๐จ๐๐ข๐๐ญ๐๐ ๐
๐ข๐ฌ๐ก ๐๐ข๐จ๐๐ข๐ฏ๐๐ซ๐ฌ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ ๐ข๐ง ๐๐๐ฅ๐๐๐ญ๐๐ ๐๐ก๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐๐ข๐จ๐ซ๐๐ ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐ฌ ๐๐ฎ๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐๐จ๐ซ๐ญ๐ก๐๐๐ฌ๐ญ (๐จ๐๐๐๐๐) ๐๐จ๐ง๐ฌ๐จ๐จ๐ง: ๐๐ง๐ฌ๐ข๐ ๐ก๐ญ๐ฌ ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ฆ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ญ๐๐๐๐ซ๐๐จ๐๐ข๐ง๐ ๐๐จ๐ซ ๐๐ข๐จ๐ฆ๐จ๐ง๐ข๐ญ๐จ๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐ ,โ assessed fish diversity in mangrove ecosystems across Catanduanes, Batangas, Aklan, and Palawan using environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding. By analyzing more than two million sequence reads from water samples, the researchers identified 276 operational taxonomic units (OTUs), with 159 resolved to the species level.
The findings revealed clear spatial variation in fish community composition across bioregions and habitat types, driven by environmental and biogeographic factors such as salinity, habitat type, vegetation, water flow, climate, and site characteristics. Notably, the study detected two Vulnerable species, ๐ธ๐๐๐๐๐โ๐๐๐ข๐ ๐๐ข๐ ๐๐๐๐ข๐ก๐ก๐๐ก๐ข๐ and ๐ป๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ข๐ ๐๐ข๐๐, highlighting the conservation importance of mangrove ecosystems as critical biodiversity reservoirs.
More than half of the identified species have commercial value, underscoring the vital role of mangroves in supporting fisheries, food security, and coastal livelihoods. At the same time, the presence of Data Deficient, Not Evaluated, and unknown species points to existing gaps in biodiversity knowledge and emphasizes the need to expand tropical genetic reference databases and strengthen long-term monitoring efforts.
This publication demonstrates the effectiveness of eDNA metabarcoding as a non-invasive, cost-efficient, and highly sensitive tool for large-scale biodiversity assessment. It provides valuable baseline data to support evidence-based conservation, sustainable fisheries management, and adaptive strategies for enhancing mangrove resilience amid increasing environmental pressures.
This achievement highlights MSU at Naawanโs continuing leadership in marine biodiversity research, environmental DNA science, and coastal ecosystem conservation.
