What is a Resistance Ratio Contour — and Why It Matters in Structural Design
In structural engineering, every slab, beam, or column must do one thing: resist the loads applied to it.
That’s where the Resistance Ratio (RR) Contour becomes a powerful tool.
🔍 What is a Resistance Ratio?
It’s the ratio of Demand / Capacity of a structural element.
RR < 1.0 → Safe
RR = 1.0 → At limit
RR > 1.0 → Overstressed
📌 What the Contour Shows
A Resistance Ratio Contour visualizes these values across a slab or structural component.
🏗️ Why It Matters
For engineers and building owners, RR contours help ensure:
Safe and code‑compliant designs
Efficient reinforcement placement
Early detection of overstressed zones
Optimized construction cost without compromising safety
At RTAN Engineering, we use advanced finite element modeling to generate these contours—giving our clients clear, data‑driven insights into the safety and performance of their structures.

**Tools Utilized in Non-Destructive Testing** 🔧🔍
At RTAN Engineering, we believe in the power of precision and reliability when it comes to structural assessments. Our team uses advanced tools designed to effectively evaluate structural integrity while ensuring that materials remain undamaged. We're committed to delivering thorough and trustworthy evaluations for every project.
🔹Rebar Scanner — Detects reinforcement bars and measures concrete cover depth for accurate mapping.
🔹 Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity Tester — Assesses concrete quality by measuring sound wave travel time through the material.
🔹 Rebound Hammer — Estimates surface hardness and compressive strength of concrete with quick, on‑site results.
🔹 Range Finder — Provides precise distance measurements for structural layout and inspection accuracy.

5 Signs Your Building Needs a Structural Assessment
Protect your property. Protect the people inside.
1️⃣ Visible Cracks on Walls or Columns
Wide, expanding, or diagonal cracks may indicate structural stress that needs professional evaluation.
2️⃣ Doors or Windows Suddenly Misaligning
If doors no longer close properly or windows feel jammed, your building may be experiencing uneven settlement or frame distortion.
3️⃣ Sagging Floors or Uneven Levels
Any noticeable slope, bounce, or deflection in floors can signal compromised beams, slabs, or foundations.
4️⃣ Water Leaks or Spalling Concrete with Rust Stains
Moisture intrusion accelerates deterioration. Rust‑stained, spalling concrete is a red flag that requires immediate assessment.
5️⃣ Building Age Over 15–20 Years
Older structures may no longer meet current code requirements. A periodic audit ensures safety, compliance, and long‑term reliability.
🧱 When in doubt, have it checked.
RTAN Engineering provides Structural Assessment, Retrofitting Design, and Non‑Destructive Testing to ensure your building remains safe and compliant.

Throwback: Our First Project way back 2023
This project involved the structural assessment of multiple existing facilities, 3 warehouses, 1 distribution center, and 1 caustic wash tower. Evaluated under varying wind load scenarios: 28 knots, 63 knots, and up to 130 knots.
Project objective: to project potential damage costs and help stakeholders understand the risk before it becomes a reality.
From analyzing structural response to quantifying possible losses, this project laid the foundation of our expertise in performance-based assessment and risk-informed engineering.

Out on-site today!
Spent the day going through crack assessments, rebound hammer tests, and rebar scanning to make sure everything’s in good shape. A bit of ceiling work, a bit of rooftop work, and a lot of teamwork in between.
It is always good to be out in the field and gathering data for the structural analysis. Solid day with the team!
