🚨 Permanent Hair Dye and Breast Cancer Risk
A large National Institutes of Health (NIH) study has found that frequent use of permanent hair dye or chemical hair straighteners may increase the risk of developing breast cancer.
Researchers at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) analyzed data from more than 46,000 women in the Sister Study and found:
Permanent hair dye: Women who regularly used it were 9% more likely to develop breast cancer than non-users.
African American women: Faced the greatest impact, with a 60% increased risk when using dye every 5–8 weeks, compared to an 8% increase for white women.
Chemical hair straighteners: Women who used them every 5–8 weeks had about a 30% higher risk, regardless of race.
While the study doesn’t prove a direct cause-and-effect relationship, it strengthens concerns that chemical exposures from beauty products may play a role in cancer risk. Experts recommend more research but note that limiting exposure could be a step toward prevention.
