Feast of Saint Luigi Orione

Saint Luigi Orione (1872–1940) was an Italian priest and founder of the Sons of Divine Providence (FDP) and the Little Missionary Sisters of Charity (LMSC). Born in Pontecurone, Italy, he was deeply inspired by charity and service from a young age, especially during his formation under Saint John Bosco.

Ordained a priest in 1895, Don Orione dedicated his life to helping the poor, abandoned, and marginalized. He founded schools, orphanages, and charitable institutions, beginning with an oratory and boarding school for poor boys. His growing mission became the Little Work of Divine Providence, officially approved in 1903, aiming to bring people—especially the poor—closer to the Church through acts of charity and strong fidelity to the Pope.

He responded actively to social issues and disasters, assisting victims of major earthquakes and serving as Vicar General of Messina by appointment of Pope Pius X. In 1915 he founded the Little Missionary Sisters of Charity and later other religious communities and lay associations.

After World War I, his charitable works expanded greatly, including the creation of “Little Cottolengos,” homes caring for the sick, disabled, and abandoned. His missionary efforts spread worldwide—to Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Palestine, Poland, the United States, England, and Albania.

Respected by popes and Church leaders, Don Orione was known as a preacher, confessor, and tireless promoter of devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. He died on March 12, 1940, expressing his desire to remain close to the poor until the end.

His incorrupt body was discovered in 1965, and in 1980 Pope John Paul II declared him Blessed, leading to his continued veneration as Saint Luigi Orione.

St. Luigi Orione, pray for us. 🙏
