This little contraption came together the day of Kolenchii’s Katara shoot. The fastest thing I’ve ever built and programmed! 🤪
We wanted to capture real-world water bending using water balloons. The challenge was speed. Even at the highest shutter speed, the camera couldn't freeze the action. We had to improvise. I used a long-exposure technique paired with a flash trigger to capture the exact moment the balloon popped.
It looks complicated, but it’s just an Arduino controller, a microphone, and an optocoupler. I even added an optional LCD screen to precisely control the latency (the delay in milliseconds between the pop and the flash).

I am beyond thankful for the overwhelming love these Adult Toph photos have received from the Avatar community! As a photographer, it’s so easy to feel pressured by the unwritten rules of social media. The apps generally favor bright, evenly lit, "safe" photos that are easy to consume on a quick scroll. It can sometimes feel like you have to compromise your style just to get your work seen. Taking a risk to ignore all of that and lean into this moody, high-contrast, dramatic setup with Kolenchii was so refreshing. Seeing it resonate with so many of you and succeed completely against the "norm" makes me incredibly happy. Thank you for validating the art!
