PCSโ€“JHS Courier Holds Two-Day Screening for Aspiring Campus Journalists

After weeks of anticipation and several announcements, the much-awaited PCS-JHS Courier Screening 2026 officially commenced, bringing together aspiring campus journalists eager to demonstrate their creativity, talent, and passion for journalism.

Held over two days, June 25โ€“26, 2026, the screening provided applicants with opportunities to showcase their skills across the different roles of The Courier.

The first day of the screening, held from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM in Computer Labs 1 and 2 of the San Lorenzo Ruiz Building, was dedicated to the Photojournalism and Layout Artist roles.

In Computer Lab 1, Head Photojournalist Lhean Castor welcomed the applicants with a brief orientation before the skill assessment.
The aspiring photojournalists then explored the school campus, capturing photographs based on their chosen themes: Catholic Life, Still Life, and Nature. Through their lenses, they showcased not only their technical photography skills but also their ability to tell compelling stories through images.

Meanwhile, in Computer Lab 2, Head Layout Artist Maria Mirabueno conducted a short orientation before the applicants began their assessment. The layout artist applicants were challenged to design the front page of a newspaper based on a topic of their choiceโ€”whether news or sportsโ€”demonstrating their creativity, visual storytelling, and publication design skills.

The screening continued on Day 2 in Rooms 205 and 206 of the St. Roche Building, where aspiring writers and cartoonists showcased their talents.

In Room 205, Editor-in-Chief Wreese Cayao led a short orientation, encouraging the applicants before they proceeded to their skill assessment. Each aspiring writer was tasked with producing an article under their chosen category, allowing them to demonstrate their journalistic writing skills, creativity, and mastery of their selected field.

At the same time, in Room 206, Head Cartoonist Monic Gesalan conducted a brief orientation for the cartoonist applicants. They were then challenged to create an editorial cartoon based on a given topic, showcasing their artistic ability, creativity, and understanding of current issues through visual commentary.

Following the skills assessments, all applicants proceeded to the interview stage. The interviews were led by the School Paper Advisers, Ms. Charlene Genir and Ms. Threxy Isuga, with the assistance of Mrs. Richane Reyes and Ms. Thea Mariano, to assess each applicant's character, communication skills, and commitment to becoming members of the Courier.

The two-day screening served as more than just a series of assessmentsโ€”it became a platform for students to express their creativity, sharpen their journalistic skills, and embrace the responsibility of informing and inspiring the school community.

The Courier extends its sincere appreciation to the School Paper Advisers, editorial heads, teachers, committee members, and staff whose dedication and support made the successful conduct of the two-day screening possible. It also applauds every applicant who embraced the challenge with passion, creativity, and determination, reflecting the promising future of campus journalism at Pateros Catholic School.

On June 25, 2026, the Pateros Catholic School community gathered at the PCS Grounds to celebrate the annual Holy Spirit Mass, marking the beginning of the School Year 2026โ€“2027.

In his homily, Rev. Fr. Edgardo Barrameda shared that the Holy Spirit brings the gift of newness. He explained that the Holy Spirit serves as our guide, director, and source of enlightenment, leading us to seek wisdom and strengthen our faith in God throughout the school year. He also reminded the community that, through this journey, we are called to become the image of God, or Imago Dei.
Following the Mass, the school conducted the blessing of classrooms, offices, and other facilities within the PCS campus.

The Holy Spirit, the third Person of the Holy Trinity, brings God's presence into our lives through guidance, hope, and love. As part of its long-standing tradition, Pateros Catholic School celebrates the Holy Spirit Mass annually at the start of each academic year to seek God's blessings for the entire community.

May this celebration inspire every member of the PCS community to grow in wisdom, deepen their faith, recognize their worth as children of God, and live out the values of being faithful Catholics throughout the school year.
