20 April 2026 New Community Partnership: Katipunan Elementary School
Location: Brgy Katipunan, San Miguel Municipality, Catanduanes
Geographically located at the South Eastern quadrant of the of San Miguel, a 5th class and notably the only landlocked municipality in the province of Catanduanes, it also has a poverty incidence of 29.06%.
"Partly mountainous this area was first inhabited by the early mountaineers and the part of the Malayan race that were pushed to the open valley with the coming of the Spanish Colonizers." (Wiki)
Near the Southern tip of San Miguel is the barangay of Katipunan (formerly Sitio Dalongdongan) and its elementary school which narrates a history of deep community roots, continued perseverance, and noted challenges from its humble origins since1953.
1953
- The Katipunan Primary School is established by Felipe Mariano, a local and resident teacher
- Early education programs were run teachers' residences and makeshift classrooms
- Sitio Dalongdongan is officially recognized as Barangay Katipunan
1970s-2003
- 1970s a 2,888 sq mtr parcel of land was formally donated for the purpose of building a permanent school in the barangay
- In 1973 the very first permanent structures (3) are build and Katipunan Elementary School is formally established
- Additional buildings (2) were added through community efforts
- 2004 DEPED constructs an additional school building
2012
- Katipunan ES is recognized by the DEPED as a mother school for Boton PS and Solong PS
- Pavement and added infrastructural works are improved for greater accessibility and safety
2016-2018
- A health center was partially constructed near the PTA building
- Dec 2016 Typhoon Nina destroys the PTA building
- SY 2017-18 Temporary Learning Spaces were erected due to the typhoon's destructive consequences
- June 2018 ABS-CBN Lingkod Kapamilya Foundation formally turnsover a two-room school building to DEPED
- A mini covered court and canteen were added to the campus
2020- present
- Nov 2020 Super Typhoon Rolly hits the whole province of Catanduanes resulting in damage to the school
- Nov 2025 Super Typhoon Uwan strikes the province severly affecting the school's facilities and loss of their stored resources
- Current administration is implementing their rehabilitation campaign named 'Pages of Recovery' spearheaded by School Head Teacher Mrs. Jane T. Tuplano
The origins of the school's humble yet profound namesake Katipunan can be traced to its definition as a place of association and gathering. The school has become a beacon and center of development that early settlers and locals have strongly identified as an essential need in the community.
From these simple yet essential beginnings up to the present times, Katipunan ES still holds the distinction of being the central educational hub within its immediate area in San Miguel, despite its relative isolation and climatic vulnerabilities.
We at Library Hub Philippines are deeply humbled and blessed to have this opportunity to serve this community not only in its present state of rehabilitation but we also seek to maintain our mandate of promoting the love of reading and learning in the future years to come.
Grateful to Ma'am Tuplano and Ma'am Marife B. Brequillo of the DEPED Catanduanes Social Mobilization & Networking division for making this partnership possible.
Our work with Katipunan Elementary School begins.
DIOS MABALOS!!!!
