A property development built beside a mountain is definitely ambitious, but will it be worth the environmental risks?

On Aug. 24, actor and engineer Slater Young shared his latest real estate project called “The Rize at Moterrazas” located in Guadalupe, Cebu. The proposed structure is said to be inspired by the Banaue Rice Terraces, with the building following the flow of the mountain instead of just the usual high-rise.
While Young said that the mountainside development would be made “as sustainable as possible,” many social media users were worried about the environmental implications.

“The ‘Banaue-inspired’ design of Slater Young is breathtaking, but the irony of having a green architecture agenda while destroying the natural environment. In exchange for what? A luxury condo hotel? It’s a no for me,” one user wrote on Twitter.

“I hope people who are advocating against Sierra Madre being destroyed are also seeing the picture re: Slater Young’s project. It’s just the same thing: kakalbuhin ang kalikasna. This isn’t something people should take lightly considering Cebu was greatly devastated during Odette,” another wrote.

Another netizen dubbed the project “truly amazing yet terrifying,” and added how once nature’s beauty is destroyed, it cannot be repurchased.

“Slater Young if you have nothing else to do, please stay away from the mountains of Cebu. That was so out of touch and detached from the current environmental situation in the City,” another said. Others also pointed out how Slater’s own “dream home” was devastated during Odette in 2021 and how their home still has leaks that he’s been fixing.

But not all the reactions to Monterraz de Cebu have been negative as some users have found the design beautiful and unique.

In the vlog, Slater also detailed some of the sustainable features the project will tout, including a drip irrigation system, rainwater tank, and electric car chargers.
