In Loving Memory of Mr. Mark Anthony Cabangon Sy

It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mr. Mark Anthony C. Sy, former Head of the Educational Technology Unit of the Information and Communications Technology Service under the Office of the Undersecretary for Administration of the Department of Education (DepEd) Central Office, who left us on the morning of February 13, 2025.

Sir Mark, as he was affectionately known by his colleagues, was a pioneering force in the realm of educational technology. He played an instrumental role in the development and curation of open educational resources, the integration of ICT in teaching and learning, and the training of hundreds of thousands of teachers across the Philippines, notably through the Virtual In-Service Training for Teachers.

During the pandemic, Sir Mark’s vision and leadership were critical in the creation of the DepEd Commons, DepEd TV (the first television-based instruction in the country), ETUlay Online Tutorial, and countless other initiatives that continue to shape the landscape of education in the country today.

His work and legacy will always be remembered, especially by the many teachers whose lives he touched through his dedication to empowering educators and improving learning experiences. His unwavering commitment to education has left an indelible mark that will resonate for generations to come.

As we mourn his passing, we encourage everyone to take a moment of silence to honor the memory and soul of Sir Mark. Rest assured that the legacy he left will continue to inspire us all.
