The use of 𝐜𝐨𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐮𝐭 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐬 as food wrappers is a longstanding tradition deeply rooted in Filipino culinary heritage. Across the Philippines, various regions employ the young, pliable fronds of the coconut palm—often called lukáy in the Visayas, palaspas, or ibus in Southern Luzon, and langkóy in Bicol—to craft woven pouches and containers for cooking and serving food.

These woven containers are especially popular in the Visayas and Mindanao regions, where they are used to cook rice in the form of pusô—a traditional rice cake that is boiled inside the leaf pouch and enjoyed with grilled meats or fish.

The leaves’ versatility extends to other uses as well, such as crafting baskets, mats, and even religious decorations, making the coconut palm a vital resource in Filipino daily life.
