Here’s a bit more detail: • A queen usually mates with 10 to 30 drones during one or several mating flights. • Each drone deposits about 1 to 2 million s***m cells into her oviducts. • However, only about 3 to 5% of that total (roughly 4–7 million s***m) are stored long-term in her s***matheca, a special storage organ that keeps the s***m alive for years. • The rest are expelled or die soon after mating. From nectar to honey, amazing proces 🐝😍 Turning nectar into honey is one of the most fascinating things honey bees do. Here’s how it works step by step: 1. Collecting Nectar 🐝 Forager bees suck nectar from flowers using their proboscis (tongue) and store it in their honey stomach (a special crop separate from their digestive stomach). 2. Enzymes Added While in the bee’s honey stomach, enzymes like invertase start breaking down the nectar’s main sugar (sucrose) into glucose and fructose. This makes it easier for bees to use and less likely to crystallize. 3. Transfer in the Hive Back in the hive, the forager bee passes the nectar to a house bee through trophallaxis (mouth-to-mouth transfer). The house bees continue to work the nectar, adding enzymes and spreading it over the honeycomb cells. 4. Evaporation Nectar is about 70–80% water when collected. Bees fan their wings to create airflow, evaporating the water until the liquid thickens to around 17–20% water. This stops fermentation and preserves the honey. 5. Capping Once the nectar has become honey, bees seal the cell with a thin layer of beeswax.
