Before sunrise, while many of us are still asleep, fisherfolk are already out at sea.
They face rough waters, uncertain weather, and long hours of work to bring food to our tables. Their livelihoods depend on healthy oceans, yet they are often among the first to feel the effects of climate change, declining fish stocks, and marine degradation.

This National Fisherfolk Day, we recognize the people behind every catch. Their work sustains families, supports local economies, and keeps coastal traditions alive.

The celebration is not only about gratitude. It is also a reminder that the future of our fisheries depends on protecting the waters they rely on and ensuring that fishing communities are heard, supported, and valued.

To all fisherfolk across the country, thank you for the work you do every day.

Documented within the vicinity of the Pujada Bay Protected Landscape and Seascape, Willanโ€™s Chromodoris is a striking dorid nudibranch recognized by its bluish-white body, dark longitudinal lines, and white-speckled gills and rhinophores.

Beyond its delicate appearance, this sea slug carries an impressive defense strategy. Like many chromodorid nudibranchs, ๐˜พ๐™๐™ง๐™ค๐™ข๐™ค๐™™๐™ค๐™ง๐™ž๐™จ ๐™ฌ๐™ž๐™ก๐™ก๐™–๐™ฃ๐™ž can secrete toxic or distasteful chemical substances that help protect it from predators. This chemical defense may explain why the species is often seen exposed on reef surfaces rather than hidden away. It also appears relatively tolerant of dive lights compared with some other nudibranch species, making it a fascinating subject for underwater documentation.

Small, colorful, and chemically defended, Chromodoris willani reminds us that the reefs of Pujada Bay are home to remarkable marine lifeโ€”some of which can be easily overlooked despite their ecological significance. | Photo by Dr. Ulrike Pfreundt/rrreefs
