Why do many Filipino families treat their children like a retirement plan?🤔💭

Not because parents are bad.
And not because they don’t love their kids.

Most of the time, it’s just the system they grew up seeing.

No savings.
No pension.
No retirement fund.

So the unspoken plan becomes:
“Anak na ang bahala sa akin balang araw.”

You hear it in small ways.

“Mag-aral ka mabuti para maiahon mo ang pamilya.”
“Ikaw ang pag-asa namin.”
“Balang araw ikaw ang tutulong sa amin.”

At first it sounds like motivation.
But over time, it becomes pressure.

Because a child slowly grows up carrying a responsibility they never chose.

Here’s the uncomfortable truth:

Children are not retirement plans.

Helping your parents out of love is beautiful. Pero ibang usapan kapag nagiging obligasyon na habang buhay.

Parents are meant to prepare for their future. Children are meant to build theirs.

Hindi tagapag-salba ang anak. Tulungan sila ma build ang pangarap nila para sa sarili nila.
