The kissing of a Bishop's ring is an ancient custom that echoes a sign of respect for the office of bishop.

layman or a cleric of inferior grade on being presented to a bishop should kiss his hand, which is to say, an obligation to kiss the episcopal ring. Before (Vatican II) the promulgation of the new Enchiridion Indulgentiarum, an indulgence of 50 days (for the souls suffering in the Purgatory) resulted from this act. This act has been continued by Catholic Traditionalists especially by the Society of Saint Pius X.
