In the aftermath of Typhoon Pepito, a Category 4 storm that swept across Luzon, Build Change visited Baler, Aurora, to check on the houses we had strengthened through our partnership with ASKI Group and Holcim Philippines. The experience was both humbling and inspiring.

The homes that had been constructed stood strong against the typhoon's ferocity, sustaining little to no damages. Even more heartening was seeing the smiles and hearing from the homeowners themselves—many shared that they barely felt the storm's wrath, a stark contrast to past experiences of vulnerability during severe weather.

This outcome reinforces the importance of investing in resilient housing solutions. It’s a testament to what we can achieve through collaboration, innovation, and a shared commitment to empowering communities. Together, we have not just built houses but safeguarded lives and livelihoods.

As climate change continues to intensify storms and natural disasters, our work remains vital. Let Baler’s story remind us that resilient housing is not just a necessity—it’s a lifeline.

Cities are expanding rapidly, and by 2050, an additional 2.5 billion people are expected to reside in urban areas across Africa and Asia. This unprecedented growth raises critical questions: How can we improve access to affordable housing and scale up housing finance? What innovative approaches can address the demand beyond formal housing systems?

On Thursday, Girlie Lopez, will join a webinar discussion on how effective practices can ensure adequate, safe and affordable housing. Likewise, the webinar aims to focus on uncovering innovative solutions for housing finance.
