MIGHTY MAN OF VALOR

Gideon's account is an intriguing one, which has a lot to say to us today. I would like to highlight two characteristics of Gideon. Because of these qualities, God chose him to lead the children of Israel to victory over Midianites.

First, Gideon was a brave man. We notice his bravery as he threshed wheat by the winepress, and hid it from the Midianites. We observe his bravery when he destroyed the alter of Baal, and then erected one to the Lord and offered a sacrifice on it. Later, we see him going against the multitudes of the enemy with only three hundred men. Truly, Gideon was a brave man.

Secondly, Gideon was a humble man. He considered himself poor and the least in his father's house. Gideon needed a sure sign that God would be with him. He recognized that in his own strength he could not face the enemy. Gideon demonstrated humility when he acknowledged that God was the One who would deliver Israel.

We need men, women, boys, and girls who are brave and humble- brave, in that they are willing to stand for right in a world that is bent on doing evil; humble, in recognizing that without God we are no match for the enemy. Remember, Christ is the victory! Bravely, but very humbly, go forward against the foe.

WALKING OR SINKING?

"But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me." -Matthew 14:30

The life of Peter has been a real inspiration to me. It seems like Peter did everything with enthusiasm! It even got him into some tight places at times.

In today's reading, the disciples had just finished feeding the five thousand, when Jesus told them to get into the boat and go across the sea. The disciples, no doubt, were tired after the long day and ready for a time to relax. Jesus also needed time to be alone; he went into the mountains to pray.

The disciples were out on the sea and it became boisterous. In the middle of this situation, Jesus came to them walking on the water. When the disciples first saw Him, they cried in fear because they thought they were seeing a spirit; but Jesus called to them and told them, "Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid." Then we see Peter's response, "Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water." Jesus told him to come, and Peter stepped overboard and began to walk towards Jesus. On his way to meet Jesus, Peter was distracted by the waves around him and began to sink.

So often this happens to us. We take our attention off Jesus, and we end up sinking instead of walking with Him as we should.

The story does not end there, however. As Peter called out for help, the Lord reached down and pulled him up. That is what He wants to do for everyone. The next time you feel like you are sinking, call out to the Lord, and He will pull you out.

THE POWER OF GOD

"God is my strength and power: and he maketh my way perfect." -2 Samuel 22:33

Recently we went to help in the cleanup after a tornado. Arriving at our destination, we found large trees lying all over the yard; some were three feet in diameter. In the afternoon, we helped a farmer clean debris out of his bean field. We found an assortment of objects, from pictures to logo, scattered over the field.

When the day was finished, I stood in awe as I thought of the power revealed in the tornado. I felt so small and insignificant as I looked at what God's power can do. His power has no limit. Thinking back over the day, I had to ask myself, "Who am I, that I would dare to stand against this mighty, wonderful, powerful God who can at any moment move mountains if He wishes?" Friends, we are the losers if we in any way resist God.

There is another power of God- the power to save lost souls through Jesus Christ. This power becomes available to us as we surrender to Him. Have you experienced the trill of being one with Him in Christ? Have the big tress and debris been removed from your life? Do you feel His power moving through you?
