Ep. 4 🐟 Offshore Kanpachi farming! In the last episode, we explored this Hawaiian fish farm’s hatchery from broodstock and eggs to ocean-ready juveniles. Today, we’re following those juvenile kanpachi out to sea as they transition to the U.S.’ only offshore fish pens. Kanpachi will spend about 8 months at sea feeding and growing in the pristine waters off Kailua-Kona. Specialized submersible pens let the farmers raise and lower their fish at will, aiding in their growth and protecting them from storms. Once kanpachi reach about 5 pounds, they begin harvesting them with the pens’ built-in capture net. Pumped aboard a harvest vessel, they’re sized and iced at sea. Then, they’ll head back to land for processing. Harvests happen twice a week and these delicious fish hit markets across the US next-day. The entire offshore operation is coordinated with @noaafisheries and other scientific and regulatory groups to ensure this unique farm is sustainable in its ecosystem – it’s a measure that @blue_ocean_mariculture is proud to partake in, and it’s something I found most compelling about the farm. They’re farmers, yes, but they’re also researchers and members of the community in which they farm. *Note that “sashimi-grade” is not a regulated term in the US and whether or not fish is considered safe for raw consumption is at your seller’s discretion. #fyp #fishtok #seafood #kanpachi #aquaculture #hawaii #blueoceanmariculture #fishfarm #offshore #farmraised #noaa #sustainability 20/08/2024
