It is very important to emphasize that in a Variable Universal Life (VUL) plan, only a portion of the policyowner’s premium actually goes into investment. A significant part of the payment is first allocated to cover insurance charges, policy fees, and administrative costs before the remainder is invested in the chosen fund.
This distinction matters because the way growth is perceived differs between the adviser and the policyowner.
• From the adviser’s perspective, the fund value grows based only on the invested portion plus whatever returns the fund generates.
• From the policyowner’s perspective, however, they could see the “growth” as the total premiums they have paid plus returns—without realizing that a considerable slice of their payment has already been consumed by insurance-related charges.
If this is not explained properly, the policyowner might mistakenly believe that their entire premium is working for them in the market, which could later lead to disappointment when they compare the actual fund value with their total contributions.
This is why clear disclosure is critical. It sets the right expectations and ensures that clients fully understand that the value of a VUL is not purely an investment account, but a hybrid product that balances both insurance protection and investment growth.
