As per IS 2911 & IS 456, the top portion of piles is intentionally broken after concreting to:

Remove weak and contaminated concrete (laitance, slurry, mud)

Expose sound concrete for proper bonding

Ensure correct anchorage of pile reinforcement into pile cap

Achieve required cut-off level (COL)

Enable safe and effective load transfer from structure to foundation

Breaking pile head is a mandatory site practice, not a defect. Only sound concrete + properly anchored steel should carry structural loads.
