As part of the culmination of National Womenโs Month 2026, the Guidance and Student Welfare Service Unit of the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines - Jasaan held an HIV Awareness Symposium on March 30, 2026, at the USTP Jasaan Covered Court. Collaborating with the Jasaan Rural Health Unit (RHU Jasaan) and the Gender and Development (GAD) Office, the symposium featured interactive talks on HIV prevention, personal stories from advocates, and open forums that empowered students, faculty, and staff to promote health awareness and gender equality.
Centered on the theme of informed choices and responsible health practices, the symposium was a key highlight of the Womenโs Month celebration, underscoring that womenโs empowerment also includes access to accurate health information and the ability to make safe, informed decisions.
A highlight of the program was the lecture, โ๐๐๐ฉ ๐๐ฑ๐๐ฐ๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป: ๐ฆ๐บ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ ๐๐ต๐ผ๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฒ๐ ๐ฆ๐๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ ๐๐ถ๐๐ต ๐๐๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ป๐ฒ๐๐,โ by ๐ฉ๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ฒ ๐ญ. ๐ ๐๐น๐ฎ๐๐ฎ๐ป ๐๐ฟ., ๐ฅ๐ก, Public Health Nurse from the Jasaan Rural Health Unit. Mr. Mulawan discussed HIV transmission, its effects on the body, and potential complications if left untreated. He emphasized the critical role of awareness, prevention, and early understanding in combating stigma and misinformation.
The symposium also encouraged practical, open conversations about sexual health. As part of the awareness campaign, condoms were distributed to students to promote preventive health practices and reinforce the importance of protection and responsibility. This initiative reflected the campusโs commitment to creating a more informed, health-conscious, and stigma-free environment for young people.
Following the lecture, participants joined an open forum and reflection session to ask questions, clarify misconceptions, and share insights. The forum fostered open dialogue and addressed a topic often misunderstood, making the session both educational and meaningful.
A highlight of the event was the candlelight ceremony led by Mr. Mulawan, where students, faculty, and staff lit candles as symbols of hope, solidarity, and remembrance for those affected by HIV. The ceremony powerfully reminded everyone of the importance of compassion, understanding, and collective responsibility in combating HIV-related stigma and discrimination.
Through the HIV Awareness Symposium, USTP Jasaan concluded its Womenโs Month celebration by featuring expert talks, interactive Q&A sessions, and personal testimonials on health empowerment, education, and social responsibility. The event served as a dynamic platform for advocacy and awareness, emphasizing the role of informed communities in fostering a safer and more compassionate society.

Despite earning top marks and recognition, some academic achievers are quietly doing only what is requiredโnot because they lack ability, but because the pressure to perform constantly is taking its toll.
In todayโs academic environment, being labelled an โ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ต๐ถ๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐ฟโ often comes with pressure, expectations, and a constant need to prove oneself. For some students, this leads to burnout rather than growth. Instead of pushing further, they begin to do just enough to maintain their imageโsubmitting requirements on time, passing exams, and keeping their grades intactโbut no longer striving to go beyond what is required.
This shift is not always visible. On paper, they are still successful. But internally, many feel unmotivated, exhausted, or even disconnected from their goals. The passion they once had for learning slowly fades, replaced by a routine of compliance. They no longer chase excellence; they sustain it.
Several factors contribute to this behaviour. Academic pressure, fear of failure, and the need to meet high expectations can drain a studentโs drive. When effort is constantly tied to performance, students may begin to see learning as a task rather than a meaningful experience. Over time, doing the bare minimum becomes a way to copeโa strategy to survive rather than thrive.
Social comparison also plays a role. In competitive environments, students may feel that no matter how much they do, it will never be enough. This mindset can lead to self-doubt, making them question their abilities despite their achievements. As a result, they choose safety over risk, sticking only to what is required instead of exploring their full potential.
However, settling for less does not mean these students have lost their capability. It reflects a need for balance, support, and a renewed sense of purpose. Encouraging a healthier academic environmentโone that values growth, creativity, and well-beingโcan help students rediscover their motivation.
Academic achievers are more than their grades. When they begin to accept the bare minimum, it is not a sign of laziness, but a signal that something needs to change. Because true success is not just about meeting expectationsโit is about finding the drive to go beyond them again.
