ANDRES BONIFACIO DAY

Andrés Bonifacio was born on November 30, 1863, in Tondo, Manila, Philippines. He played a crucial role in the Philippine Revolution against Spanish colonial rule. The Philippine Revolution was a series of struggles that aimed to achieve independence for the Philippines after centuries of Spanish colonization.

Bonifacio, along with other like-minded Filipinos, founded the Katipunan on July 7, 1892. The full name of this revolutionary society was Kataas-taasan, Kagalang-galangan Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan (Supreme and Venerable Society of the Children of the Nation). The Katipunan was a secret society that sought to unite Filipinos in their quest for independence and equality.

The Katipunan played a crucial role in the outbreak of the Philippine Revolution. On August 23, 1896, the revolution officially began when the Katipunan's existence was discovered by Spanish authorities. This event is known as the Cry of Pugad Lawin or Cry of Balintawak. Bonifacio, along with other Katipunan leaders, tore their cedulas (residence certificates) in defiance of Spanish rule, symbolizing their call for independence.

The revolution gained momentum, and Bonifacio emerged as one of its key leaders. However, internal conflicts within the revolutionary movement, particularly the Tejeros Convention in March 1897, led to disagreements among the revolutionary leaders. Bonifacio found himself marginalized, and Emilio Aguinaldo was elected as the new leader of the revolutionary government.

The internal strife ultimately led to the tragic events of the Limbon, where Bonifacio and his brother Procopio were arrested, tried for treason, and sentenced to death. On May 10, 1897, Andrés Bonifacio and his brother were executed in the mountains of Maragondon, Cavite.

Bonifacio's contributions to the Philippine Revolution and his role as a key figure in the country's fight for independence are remembered and honored on Bonifacio Day, observed annually on November 30th. The day serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by Bonifacio and the Katipunan in the pursuit of Philippine freedom.
