Why is the DNA Data Biased?

The bias is primarily geographic and demographic. Because early genetic research and large-scale biobanks (like the UK Biobank) were established in Europe and North America, the majority of the world's genetic information belongs to people of European descent.

The Disparity: As of recent years, it is estimated that over 80%–90% of participants in genome-wide association studies (GWAS) are of European ancestry, even though Europeans make up only about 10%–15% of the global population.

The Missing Link: Indigenous populations, Latin Americans, and continental Africans are significantly underrepresented. For example, Africa contains more genetic diversity than the rest of the world combined, yet it represents less than 2% of available genomic data.
