Environmental Protection Seminar

Digos City, Philippines — September 13, 2025. The University of Mindanao Digos College (UMDC)-NSTP Office held an Environmental Protection Seminar at the Dr. Luisa E. Tinio Gymnasium, gathering NSTP I students to strengthen their awareness and commitment to environmental stewardship.

The seminar featured Dr. Jhester Hornejas, PhD, as the resource speaker, who highlighted the importance of mangrove conservation and protection. He explained how mangroves serve as vital coastal defenses, nurseries for marine life, and natural carbon sinks. “Mangrove forests are nature’s frontline defenders—when we protect them, we protect both our environment and our communities,” Dr. Hornejas emphasized. He also shared practical strategies on sustainability and youth involvement in ecological initiatives.

The activity forms part of UMDC’s advocacy for Quality, Affordable, and Open Education, inspiring students to take an active role in protecting the environment. Participants expressed their eagerness to support future tree and mangrove planting programs, reaffirming their commitment to a greener and more sustainable community.
