During the Spanish colonial era, the Islas Filipinas extended far beyond the present-day Philippines. Its territories included Palau, Guam, the Mariana Islands, and the Caroline Islands (now part of Micronesia).
For centuries, these islands were administered from Manila as part of Spainβs Philippine colony. Palau was even regarded as part of the Philippines by the First Philippine Republic in Malolos. However, this claim never materialized, as Spain ceded the Philippines and Guam to the United States following the Spanish-American War, while the Mariana and Caroline Islands were sold to Germany. These territories later came under Japanese control before eventually being occupied by the United States during World War II.
Although the civil government of the Spanish Philippines was centered in Manila, the ecclesiastical administration of Guam and neighboring islands was originally under the Archdiocese of Cebu.
It was also in Guam where Cebuano missionary catechist Pedro Calungsod was martyred in 1672, a significant chapter in Cebuβs religious and historical heritage.

For more than three centuries, Spain ruled the Philippines, yet no reigning Spanish monarch ever visited the islands during the colonial era.
That changed on February 11, 1998, when King Juan Carlos I and Queen SofΓa of Spain visited Cebu as part of the Philippine Centennial celebrations, marking the first and only visit of a reigning Spanish monarch to the Queen City of the South.
The visit was highly symbolic. Cebu was where Miguel LΓ³pez de Legazpi established Spainβs first permanent settlement in the Philippines in 1565, making it the starting point of more than 300 years of Spanish colonial rule. More than four centuries later, the Spanish King and Queen returned not as rulers, but as honored guests.
Their visit served as a powerful reminder of the deep historical ties between Spain and the Philippines, highlighting friendship, reconciliation, and a shared history that continues to shape both nations today.
