Martino Abellana, The Dean of Cebuano Painters

Martino Abellana (1914-1986) is a central figure in the development of most Cebuano artists. A patient, understanding teacher famed for his savage wit and impatience with mediocrity, the ideal maestro artist. Called by his admirers as “the Amorsolo of the South,” was born to an artistic family, he was exposed to art early. His father, Teofilo, a school principal and assiduous reader, was the sculptor of Carcar Even his grandfather, Saloy Abellana, was an apprentice to Isabelo Tampingco in Manila.
Martino Abellana lived, worked, and taught in Cebu, despite graduating with his degree in fine arts in Manila. He facilitated the local development of art in Cebu together with his contemporary painter and friend Professor Julian Jumalon and helped found the fine arts program at the University of the Philippines College Cebu, where he left his greatest legacy by influencing an entire generation of Cebuano painters.

Abstract paintings can also be appreciated in terms of the individual elements of art: color, shape, line, texture, space, value, etc. An abstract artist's skills lie in his or her ability to use colors and textures to their best visual strength and to create a sound composition from these elements.
You should have a solid foundation in technical skills as the foundation of your art before you can intentionally abstract it. If you know how to follow the rules, you will be able to break them when they make sense. When you try to do so without any insights you won't know what is good and what is not!
