🎧 OET Listening Tip: What to Do BEFORE the Recording Starts

Before the audio begins, use the preview time wisely 👀
✔️ Read the questions first
✔️ Underline keywords
✔️ Predict the answer type you need to fill the gaps (number, symptom, medication, time, instruction)

📌 This helps you listen with a purpose—so you don’t miss important details.

Quick example:
Question: “The patient should ____ the medication if symptoms become ____.”
👉 Expect: a VERB + an ADJECTIVE

Example answer: “stop” / “severe”
➡️ “The patient should stop the medication if symptoms become severe.”

OET Reading Tip: Highlight Keywords + Expected Answer Type

Before you start scanning the texts, look at the question first and ask yourself:
👉 “What exactly am I looking for?”

🔍 Identify the answer type FAST:
✅ Number → dose, frequency, time, age, measurement
✅ Condition → diagnosis, symptoms, side effects
✅ Instruction → how to take, precautions, warnings

📌 This helps you scan smarter because you’re not reading everything—you’re searching for a specific detail.

✅ Bonus Tip: Track Synonyms (OET loves rewording!)
The answer may not appear as the exact same words from the question.

Examples:
✔️ “reduce pain” = relieve discomfort
✔️ “not advised” = contraindicated / should be avoided

💡 If you only look for exact keywords, you might miss the correct answer—even if it’s right there.

🔎Scan, don’t read (OET Tip - Reading Part A)

In Part A, you don’t have enough time to read every text line-by-line—and you don’t need to. The fastest scorers scan strategically and only read the exact line where the answer is located.

👀 Train your eyes to “hunt” for clues like:
🔹 Capital letters (e.g., drug names, abbreviations)
🔹 Numbers (dosage, frequency, age limits, measurements)
🔹 Dates / time frames (duration, follow-up schedules)
🔹 Medical terms (symptoms, conditions, procedures)
🔹 Headings & subheadings (they guide you to the right section fast)
🔹 Bold words (often key instructions, warnings, or categories)

📌 Why this works:
OET Part A is a speed-matching task. The answer is usually a specific detail, not a long explanation—so scanning helps you find it in seconds and avoid wasting time on unnecessary reading.
