Facebook recently announced the rebranding of its company as Meta. The rebranding comes after the company has been subjected to a barrage of news reports in the last month as a result of whistleblower Frances Haugen's trove of internal documents. The company's expanding ambitions beyond social media is reflected in the new name. Facebook has changed its name to Meta, which is derived from the sci-fi term metaverse, to describe its vision for working and playing in a virtual world.
The company, which has made significant investments in augmented and virtual reality, stated that the change would bring together its various apps and technologies under a single new brand. It stated that it would not change its corporate structure.
Meta also revealed Project Cambria, a new virtual reality headset. According to the company's blog, the device will be a high-end product with a higher price tag than the $299 Quest 2 headset. According to Zuckerberg, Project Cambria will be released next year.
Project Nazare is the code name for Meta's first fully AR-capable smart glasses. The glasses are "still a few years away," according to a blog post by the company. "We still have a ways to go with Nazare," Zuckerberg said, "but we're making good progress."
