Today on November 23, we gather to celebrate Fibonacci Day in honor of the Italian mathematician Leonardo of Pisa (Fibonnaci) for popularizing the sequence in the Western world.
This date written as 11/23 represents the first four numbers of the Fibonacci sequence: 1, 1, 2, 3. This sequence in particular features each number being the sum of the two preceding ones, starting with 0 and 1.
The discovery of this sequence led to many inventions and discoveries. It appears in nature, such as in the spiral patterns of pinecones, sunflowers, and shells. It is also used in computer science, engineering, and art.
The Fibonacci sequence is one of the most popular sequences for how groundbreaking it's discovery was, and this day reminds us that numbers and patterns show up all the time behind the principles of our world and our daily lives, even when we don't know it! 🔥🧠
