I was watching sometime ago at one of their videos about an experiment presented in class that will measure the speed of a bullet from a rifle. I was amazed by their presentation setup. Dahil ako ay isang Filipino (gaya-gaya/trying hard), I tried to build a different experiment that will determine the RPM (revolution per minute) of a home electric fan without physical contact even from a distance. Salvaged a laser diode from a toy, used a phototransistor, a counter, and used trial version of Labview for graphical programming. The experiment was a success and able to measure RPM values at 1, 2, 3 settings. At the end of the day, I therefore concluded that we as Filipinos can do it as well and compete globally even with limited resources and there is nothing wrong with being a trying hard because it can lead to progress and innovation!

Features of experimental demo unit:
Remote Control and Monitor with SCADA via PC (Windows, Mac, Linux), or smartphone (Android, IOS) , datalogging with database for historical archiving, data viewing and extraction for further analysis, load detection/discrimination by torque sensing, mechanical load limiting by torque limit, angular rotation counter for quantifying/assessing product, etc.

One possible application for this concept is feeding a (assuming) newly-developed fragile cable into the spool. Both torque and speed is controlled to have a consistent and sufficient wrap tension on the spool to prevent kinks/overlaps while also preventing it from breakage due to over-tension, While the spool is turning, sensor arrays could be continuously scanning the length of the cable for other damages and length location spots are taken into account. The location of damaged sectors are recorded to database with the corresponding measured parameters that failed a certain criteria. The location of damaged spots can then be cross-referenced to the exact date/time during its earlier production, and process control data variables are then reviewed, compared and analyzed for tweaking, reformulation changes. Global R&D centers of this imaginary company can collaborate further by sharing information from databases to improve their process and product efficiently.
