WHAT IF THERE IS TOTAL REFORMATION OF THE SYSTEM?

Today, let’s talk about a big “what if.” What if the Philippines reformed its political system to become more like the United Kingdom?

Right now, the Philippines follows a presidential system, like the United States. The President is both head of state and government. He or she is elected for a fixed six-year term, and that’s it—no matter how things go.

Now let’s look at the United Kingdom. It uses a parliamentary system. There, the Prime Minister is the head of government, chosen by members of Parliament. If the Prime Minister fails to do their job well, Parliament can replace them right away. It’s flexible. It’s faster. And it makes leaders more accountable.
THIS BIG WHAT IF?

Imagine if we had that in the Philippines. We might see quicker decision-making, stronger teamwork in government, and fewer political dynasties. Instead of voting based on celebrity names or family connections, voters would focus more on party platforms and performance.

But of course, reform won’t be easy. It will need changes to the Constitution, the political culture, and how we view leadership. Still, if it means better service to the people, isn’t it worth the conversation?

So today, I ask you: Should we consider the UK model? Not to copy it, but to learn from it. The goal is not change for the sake of change but change that leads to progress. Let’s keep the discussion going.

What if?
