Fermented foods like yogurt, kimchi, and sauerkraut may help reduce anxiety by supporting a healthy gut microbiome, which communicates with the brain through the gut–brain axis.
This connection can influence brain chemistry by lowering inflammation and helping regulate key neurotransmitters involved in mood.
Research from the University of Virginia School of Medicine suggests that probiotics found in fermented foods, especially Lactobacillus, can affect stress-related pathways and offer a protective effect against anxiety symptoms.
Regular consumption of these foods may support emotional resilience and stress regulation over time.
However, fermented foods should be seen as a complementary dietary support and not a replacement for medical or psychological treatment.

A new large study has found that people who eat higher amounts of ultra processed foods face a greater risk of developing several types of cancer. These foods include things like packaged snacks, sugary drinks, processed meats, and ready to eat meals that often contain artificial flavors, preservatives, and colorings. The research showed that for every small increase in how much of these foods people ate, their overall risk of cancer rose noticeably, with the strongest links seen for breast and colorectal cancers.
Experts think this happens because ultra processed foods are usually high in sugar, salt, and unhealthy fats that promote inflammation and weight gain. Some additives and chemicals formed during processing may also damage cells or interfere with the body’s natural repair systems. Together, these effects can increase the chance of mutations that lead to cancer over time.
While the study cannot say these foods directly cause cancer, it adds to growing evidence that eating fewer ultra processed foods is better for long term health. Choosing whole foods like fruits, vegetables, and grains instead of heavily packaged options can help lower the risk and support overall wellbeing.
